Polymarket is investigating a nearly $200,000 wager placed on the re-election of Nebraska Senator Pete Ricketts just one hour before a New York Times/Siena poll showed him leading the race. Vanderbilt University researchers identified the transaction, which occurred on Oct. 31 and resulted in a profit of more than $77,000 for the trader.
Timing and profits
The New York Times reported that the user secured the win after the poll data was released, though it remains unclear whether the trader had access to inside information. The timing of the bet, immediately preceding the public release of favorable polling data, has raised questions about market integrity.
Brett Goldstein of the Vanderbilt Institute of National Security stated that the series of circumstances makes it difficult to dismiss the activity as random. He said the situation requires further investigation.
Cross-platform activity
The report indicated that the same user placed similar large bets on other prediction markets, including Kalshi. This pattern suggests the activity was not isolated to a single platform.
Polymarket confirmed it had spotted the trades and is currently investigating. Kalshi declined to comment on the matter.
